Nagaland launches intensive anti-bullying campaign in schools

A comprehensive and intensive anti-bullying campaign was launched by the Nagaland government in all schools across the state on Monday.

The programme, which will continue until December 31st, was inaugurated by Nagaland Commissioner R. Doungel.

The state government's initiative comes after a meeting on August 7 between the state's Home Department, Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department, Mizoram Police, Sub-Inspector, and Young Mizo Association leaders decided to join forces to combat the menace of bullying in schools.

The meeting identified 22 sources of neighbouring Myanmar, from which drugs were smuggled into Mizoram. Drugs were also smuggled into Mizoram from other states in the Northeast region.

According to the state Excise and Narcotics Department, more than 50 people, including women, have died of drug abuse this year, with 351 deaths recorded in the past five years.

Drug abuse and smuggling pose serious threats to the state, especially given its close proximity to the Golden Triangle, infamous for its drug trafficking activities.

To address the issue, the state government has started the process of forming a Mizo Territorial Army battalion to combat drug trafficking and other law and order-related issues.

This intensive anti-bullying campaign by the government is a welcome initiative that will contribute to the broader effort to make schools and education institutions safer, happier places for children to learn, grow, and thrive.
