TS politics heats up post 'Operation Sindoor'

Days after "Operation Sindoor" was conducted in Telangana, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy held a review meeting with defence officials and police officers in Hyderabad on Sunday.

Following this, the Telangana CM has instructed the state police to be on high alert. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had ordered an inquiry into the deaths of nine people in the operation against Maoists in the forested borders of Telangana and Chhattisgarh on Saturday.

Telangana police, along their Chhattisgarh counterparts, had carried out "Operation Sindoor" deep inside the forest pockets of Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, and Khammam and Kothagudem districts of Telangana.

The joint operation was conducted after a squad of Maoists killed 22 coal miners in the Errabore area of Bhupalpally district in Telangana on Wednesday.

A total of nine Maoists were killed in the operation. "Sole credit for the success of the operation goes to the bravery and dedication of the police and security forces," the Minister tweeted on Saturday.

However, the opposition BJP in Telangana claimed that at least four of those killed were not Maoists, but villagers who had nothing to do with the extremists.

Following the operation, protests broke out in Bhopalpally, with people alleging that the operation was staged to kill Adivasis (tribal people).

The BJP has said that it suspects the hand of some Telangana politicians in the killings of the nine Adivasis.

"There is a big conspiracy behind the incident and the operation was staged to kill the Adivasis. Nine weapons were recovered from the spot, but no recovery of Maoist literature or propaganda material has been made," G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister and BJP leader, told ANI.

Reddy also demanded the dismissal of the Telangana government and the conduct of a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Responding to the allegations, Telangana Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that the government would not protect anyone involved in Maoist activities.

"It is worth mentioning that no innocent person was targeted by the Police in yesterday's anti-insurgency operation," the CMO said in a statement.

"Some political parties, targeting the government with unfounded allegations, are deliberately trying to mislead the public and spreading false information," it added.

The CMO further said that the operation was undertaken "only against Maoist couriers and those who provided shelter and logistics to the Maoists", and that the investigation would continue until "everyone involved in Maoist activities is brought to the books".
