Nellore citizens recently raised concerns over the quality of drinking water supplied in cans by unlicensed RO plants. They appealed to the Nellore municipal commissioner to conduct more thorough inspections of these plants.
Many RO plants are allegedly filling cans with untreated water and selling them without any proper checks, say residents. Every household relies on canned water for drinking purposes, they added.
The appeal also mentioned the rising demand for canned water and the subsequent mushrooming of unlicensed RO plants. Many of these operate with substandard machinery without necessary technical expertise, it said.
Citizens alleged that the lack of vigilance by municipal authorities has turned this into an opportunity for unscrupulous businesses, posing a risk to public health. They urged the commissioner to immediately check illegal plants and ensure that the water being supplied meets quality standards.
If authorities fail to act, they said, public health will be at greater risk. The minister for municipal administration and urban development, Dr Ponguru Narayana, was also requested to ensure the supply of safe and affordable mineral water across Nellore.
