Rain playing spoilsport is the last thing West Bengal needs right now, especially during Durga Puja a significant festival for Hindus locally and across the globe. Unfortunately, it looks like the reigning weather system will make this year's celebrations a dampener.
The meteorological office has issued a warning of heavy rainfall for Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal from 29 September to 4 October. Freak thunderstorms and showers are expected in the region, backed by cloudy mornings, giving way to sunny afternoons and a heavy downpour in the evenings.
The weather, unsurprisingly, has already taken a toll on the decorations and outdoor stage setups for the festival. Statistically speaking, the Meteorological Department says that Kolkata receives an average of 87mm of rainfall in September, a number it has already overshot by over 40%. Rainful days have increased from an average of seven in September to 13 this year, with the month having three back-to-back rainfall days, something that hasn't happened since 2010.
The weather forecast has also affected the rituals associated with Durga Puja. Traditionally, most worshipers prefer to offer prayers and organize rituals during the morning and evening, which aligns with the rainy weather the region will experience during the festival.
We'll have to wait and see if the weather office's forecast stands true. The impact of the rains on Durga Puja festivities will be more apparent once the festival starts tomorrow.
