CP Radhakrishnan To Be India's 15th Vice President, Biggest Win For BJP

India has elected BJP candidate Chandrapati Radhakrishnan to be the next Vice President of India, a massive victory for the BJP during a time of shrinking electoral victories.

Radhakrishnan secured 516 votes out of the total 725 votes cast, with the majority of BJP and NDA allies securing his victory. In comparison, his opponent, Syed Zaheeruddin Sudershan Reddy of the Congress Party, only received 136 votes. 13 MPs abstained from voting altogether, including MPs from Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Independents.

This victory comes during a time of shrinking electoral victories for the BJP, indicating that their grip on Indian politics is still strong, despite losing many states to the main opposition Congress Party. It is also a surprising victory, as most of the candidates elected to the top political positions in India have typically been politicians, with little to no experience in academic or business careers.

With this victory, Radhakrishnan, a former diplomat, will be the 15th Vice President of India since the position was first introduced in 1952. His term will begin on August 11, 2022, and end in 2027.

"I am deeply grateful to all the Members of Parliament for conferring this important responsibility upon me. As a loyal soldier of the BJP, I will always strive to further the policies of the Government and uphold the virtues of democracy and civil society," said Radhakrishnan after his victory.

This win is a big victory for the BJP and a significant loss for the Congress Party, leaving the opposition with a bruised status ahead of the 2024 Indian general election.
