Hyderabad man loses Rs 1 lakh in e-SIM fraud, alerts users

Cybercriminals continue to exploit digital technologies to trick unwitting users, and the latest victim is from Hyderabad. A man lost more than Rs 1 lakh through a scam involving bypasses of an One-Time Password (OTP) to activate an eSIM. It reiterate the need for consumers to be vigilant and cognizant of potential frauds.

The incident, reported earlier this week, underscores the ingenuity of fraudsters and the need for stricter security protocols in protecting users. The victim, only identified as Dusmet, reported that a fraudster collected his personal details, including Aadhaar and bank account information, and managed to activate an eSIM on his behalf. The scammer then subscribed to a Rs 1,000 monthly plan, which was being debited from his account.

The shocking part is that the OTP required to activate the eSIM somehow didn't reach his phone and was instead provided by the fraudster. Dusmet only became aware of the scam when he checked his bank account and saw the deductions. He filed a complaint with the police, who are investigating the matter.

This episode is a stark reminder of the need for stringent measures to protect users from cybercrime. It is imperative that authorities and telecom companies work together to address this issue.

"This incident emphasizes the need for increased awareness about digital security and privacy. It is no longer an option but a necessity in today's interconnected world," said cybersecurity expert Vishal Dhiman. "One must never disclose their personal details to unauthorized individuals, even if they appear legitimate."

It remains to be seen how authorities will respond to this incident and what lessons can be learned to protect users from such predatory cybercrime.
