RCB To Enter SA20 In The Future? Graeme Smith Says 'It Would Be Incredible...'

South African cricket legend Graeme Smith has expressed his desire to see Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) compete in the South African Twenty20 competition, SA20.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, the former Proteas captain said "it would be incredible" to see RCB, led by his former Test teammate and current SA20 Durban Hurricanes coach Kyle Verreynne, play in the SA20 league.

"I think RCB would definitely add incredible value to the SA20. Look, I know there's a lot of planning underway. I know the owners of the SA20 teams have had conversations with the IPL teams, hopefully, RCB is one of them."

The SA20 league, which began in 2023, features local franchises just like the IPL. It is currently composed of six teams and hopes to expand in the future.

Smith, who is the director of cricket at RCB, also shared that he has enjoyed the competitiveness of the SA20 league. He highlighted that the local tournament can only get better and that it is a great product for South African cricket.

"I think the SA20 is a fabulous competition. I have really enjoyed it. I've seen all the games so far. It's been really competitive, and I think that's what you want. You want the games to go down to the wire."

"There is a lot of depth in South African cricket, and to be able to compete against international players will add to that competition, so I think it's a great thing for South African cricket and I'm sure they'll continue to grow and get better."

Smith's remarks come after RCB claimed their first IPL title after a thrilling one-run victory over the Delhi Capitals in the tournament's grand final on 29th May 2023.
