MLA detained for 'threatening' officials in Hyderabad

Hyderabad police arrested a Bharatiya Janata Party legislator on Wednesday after he allegedly threatened and abused officials at the Saroornagar police station for filing a complaint against his son.

Bypoll for the Nagarjunasawamy Nagar assembly seat will be held on October 30, and the incident has marred the BJP's prospects, with the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) alleging that the MLA intimidated the police officials with his power to influence the election.

The legislator, T. Raja Singh, allegedly went to the police station on Wednesday and threatened to set the station on fire after he saw the complaint filed against his son, according to the Times of India.

Police filed a case against Raja Singh, who has denied the allegations, under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 354 (using derogatory language and acts to disturb public servant), and 506 (criminal intimidation).

Raja Singh, a controversial figure, has been arrested multiple times in the past. His latest arrest has sparked protests from the BJP, with party leaders and activists staging a protest at the Saroornagar police station demanding the MLA's release.

The BJP's state unit president, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, alleged that the TRS government has been misusing the police to target BJP leaders and workers.

The incident is a blow to the BJP's efforts to improve its showing in the state, as it seeks to emerge as the main opposition party to the TRS ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for 2023.

With the election season heating up, the MLA's arrest is a stark reminder of the influence of political power and the importance of ethical conduct in public office.
