The agritech sector in India is expected to create 60,000-80,000new job opportunities over the next five years, according to a senior executiveat TeamLease Services. Subburathinam P, Chief Strategy Officer at TeamLease, explained that agritech touches every aspect of farming, from innovations inwater irrigation for seeds and fertilizers to providing access to advancedmachinery and market linkages for selling produce. The sector also empowersfarmers with real-time advisory services, including weather forecasts, pest anddisease predictions, and irrigation alerts, which help them make more informeddecisions. Additionally, agritech helps bridge financial gaps by offeringcredit, insurance, and digital payment solutions.
Currently, the agritech sector in India employs around 100,000people across various technical, operational, and managerial roles. Over thenext five years, the sector is expected to generate an additional 60,000-80,000job opportunities in areas such as AI development, technology, supply chainmanagement, and sustainable farming solutions.
Subburathinam noted that most agritech jobs are not seasonal, asthe sector is heavily focused on technological innovation, data analytics, andcontinuous operational support. While some roles may have seasonal peaks—suchas crop monitoring or operations during sowing and harvesting—employees areoften engaged in other tasks during the off-season, including data analysis, equipment maintenance, or upskilling.
Agritech jobs are a mix of hybrid and on-ground roles. Softwaredevelopment, data analytics, and management positions can often be performedremotely, but roles like machine operators, field technicians, and agronomistsrequire on-the-ground presence to support farmers and monitor field operationsdirectly. The demand for these roles is particularly high inagriculture-intensive states such as Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, UttarPradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, cities like Bengaluru,Hyderabad, Pune, and Gurugram are emerging as hubs for agritech startups, offering numerous opportunities in development and management positions.
Subburathinam emphasized that while advanced technologies such asartificial intelligence, data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) playa significant role in improving the sector, the focus remains on providingpractical, user-friendly tools for farmers. Agritech is revolutionizingagriculture, particularly for smallholder farmers, by ensuring higher yields, reducing costs, and promoting sustainable growth.
The agritech sector in India represents a $24 billion opportunity, although it remains largely untapped with only 1.5% market penetration,Subburathinam added. According to NASSCOM data, India had around 450 agritechstartups in 2022, with the sector growing at a rate of 25% year-on-year.
