Expansion plans for Thiruvananthapuram airport

One of Kerala's busiest airports is set for a major expansion, with authorities investing Rs 1,300 crore in the first phase of the project. Officials say work on the runway and terminal is set to begin before the end of the year.

The southern state of Kerala is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture and traditions, and high standard of living. So it should come as no surprise that its airports handle a considerable flow of passengers every year.

According to officials, the first phase of the expansion, which is expected to begin before the end of 2022, will cost Rs 1,300 crore ($171 million). The state government is working closely with the Airport Authority of India, the body overseeing the airport, to expedite the project.

The plans include extending the runway from the current 2,700 metres to 3,348 metres to accommodate larger aircraft. The runway will be strengthened and reinforced to allow flights to land safely in poor weather conditions.

Also included in the plans is the enlargement of the terminal building to handle more passengers, as well as multi-level car parking and improvements to the road network around the airport. Authorities are also committed to making the airport eco-friendly and energy-efficient.

This is just the first phase of the massive expansion planned for the airport, and authorities are already looking ahead to the second phase, which will involve further improvements and development to strengthen Thiruvananthapuram's position as an important regional air travel hub.

This underlines the government's commitment to developing infrastructure and boosting connectivity in the state, ensuring that more people can benefit from reliable air travel services in the future.
