'Not Less Than Rs. 1 Lakh 50 Thousand': Court Boosts Maintenance For Wife, Husband Calls It 'Army Of Idle Persons'

The Delhi High Court has ordered a dramatic increase in monthly maintenance payments to be made to a woman by her husband, raising the amount to Rs 1,50,000, despite her earnings of Rs 1 lakh per month. The husband, a surgeon with an income of over Rs 1.5 crore per year, had been paying only Rs 20,000 per month to his former wife.

The Court's decision was based on the significant income disparity between the two parties, stating that the wife could not be denied maintenance solely based on her own income, especially since she had custody of their daughter. The judgement comes as a boost for women's rights activists, who have been pushing for equal maintenance payments, even as some commenters say it could fuel a husband-veto culture.

Speaking to the media after the verdict, the husband, Dr. Ambreshwar Parmar, expressed his surprise at the decision, saying, "We have an army of idle persons working in the name of gender justice and equality who have all the time in the world to comment and judge others' private lives." The court's decision, effective immediately, will be closely followed in upcoming maintenance cases.
