World Boxing Championships: Nikhat Zareen's Journey Comes To An End

Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen's pursuit of a podium finish at the ongoing IBA Women's World Boxing Championships in New Delhi came to a disappointing end on Thursday as she lost her quarterfinals bout to Turkey's Buse Naz Cakiroglu.

The 29-year-old Indian boxer went into the lightweight (57-60kg) quarterfinals bout against her Turkish opponent as the overwhelming favorite, having won the Commonwealth Games gold medal earlier this year.

However, it was not to be for Zareen as she lost 0-5 to two-time Olympic silver medallist Cakiroglu. The Turkish boxer was simply too good on the day and thoroughly deserved to win.

This was Zareen's first fight in the World Boxing Championships, where she was aiming to better her bronze medal finish from the 2019 edition in Ulan Ude, Russia.

Speaking to the media after her loss, Zareen admitted that she had not been able to perform to her potential and that Cakiroglu had deserved to win.

The Indian boxer had previously also won a silver medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in 2017 and followed it up with a gold medal at the 2017 South Asian Games.

Cakiroglu, who won the Olympic silver medal in both 2012 and 2020, will now face Japan's Madoka Wada in the last four.

The gold medal match will take place on Sunday at the K.D. Jadhav Stadium in New Delhi, where the prestigious event is being held this year.

It is the first time that the Women's World Boxing Championships have been held in India since 2006.

The organizers had expected a strong show from Zareen, but it wasn't to be. The Hyderabad-born boxer has had a fantastic run over the last decade and has consistently performed at the biggest stages.

However, it was perhaps not meant to be her day against a formidable opponent who had too much firepower for her.
