Tennis Australia Confirm Lleyton Hewitt Suspended, Fine And Cannot Captain Next Davis Cup Tie

Hoping to appeal, Hewitt faces a two-week suspension and a fine for pushing a doping official, despite claims that the contact was accidental. The incident occurred after Australias Davis Cup loss to Italy.

Hewitt, who currently captains Australia's Davis Cup team, was visibly upset after his country's loss over the weekend. According to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the two-week suspension and fine are the result of the 38-year-old's "physical contact with a doping control officer."

The doping control officer was collecting samples as part of a targeted testing initiative when the incident occurred. The ITIA stated that Hewitt's behaviour "amounted to a breach of the Universal Tennis Code of Conduct."

Despite the harsh ruling, Tennis Australia released a statement on Tuesday, confirming that they would support Hewitt's appeal.

"We understand that Lleyton and the doping control officer disagree over the facts of what happened and the incident has been misinterpreted," the statement said. "We are disappointed with the severity of the penalty. While we respect the ITIA and its work, we have serious concerns about some of the processes that led to this outcome."

It remains to be seen whether the former world No. 1 will be permitted to lead Australia at next year's Davis Cup tie against Finland in March.
