Ongole's auto drivers defied recent inflation concerns to demand greater subsidies from the government to help with their financial struggles.
Recently, the Auto rickshaw and Taxi Welfare Association (AIRTWF) organised a massive rally of auto drivers in Ongole, demanding that the government increase their subsidies under the 'Vahana Mitra' scheme. While the scheme currently provides 20,000 for auto drivers, they are now petitioning to increase this to 30,000.
The association highlighted the struggles of the drivers, many of whom have seen their incomes plummet due to rising prices and the general economic climate. They also demanded that the government take action to reduce the duties and VAT on diesel and gas, which was increased by both the Central and State governments. Despite the causes for these tax increases, the auto drivers argue that the result has been a decline in their quality of life.
The rally was a strong display of solidarity amongst auto drivers, and it remains to be seen how the government will respond.
