A recent meeting held in Hyderabad, Telangana, reviewed the significant progress made in road safety in the state. Led by Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Former Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, the review focused on accident data, enforcement measures, awareness programmes, and time-bound strategies to improve road safety.
The state of Telangana has seen an unprecedented rise in vehicle population of 148% over the past ten years, with 9.3 lakh new vehicles added annually. This has led to a high rate of accidents and fatalities on Telanganas roads. Nonetheless, officials report that initiatives are beginning to show results, as there has been a dip in fatalities for the first seven months of 2025 compared to the previous year.
The Telangan government vision is to move steadily towards an accident-free Telangana by focusing on stricter enforcement, engineering measures, and a culture of responsible driving. Key initiatives include Childrens Traffic Awareness Parks, an AI-enabled Road Safety Curriculum, and Road Safety Clubs in schools and colleges. The Cabinet also proposed a Road Safety Fund to finance awareness, enforcement, medical camps, and training.
Enforcement and engineering measures include mapping out black spots on highways and fixing them, adopting GIS-based platforms and intelligent traffic management systems, and installing AI-driven enforcement cameras along the Outer Ring Road to monitor violations such as driving without a seatbelt, overspeeding and lane indiscipline.
Justice Sapre praised Telanganas initiatives and called for faster, measurable outcomes. He directed officials to hold monthly district-level Road Safety Committee meetings, ensure quick remediation of potholes and black spots, verify that all government employees hold valid licenses and insurance, and send automated alerts to vehicle owners about license and insurance expiry.
He urged all departments to work together to make Telangana a model state for road safety in other states.
