Focus on Vaccine Development, Waste Management, and Energy Needs
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the 108th Indian Science Congress (ISC), emphasized the need for India to become the "most advanced laboratory of modern science" in the Amrit Kaal, the 25-year period leading to the centenary of India's independence. He expressed confidence that India's scientific community would help the nation secure a leading position in global science.
In his virtual address to the ISC held in Nagpur, Modi urged scientists to focus on critical areas such as vaccine development, waste management, and energy solutions. He stressed that scientific advancements must contribute to disaster management and ensure food security.
Highlighting the government's push for a circular economy, Modi pointed out that waste management—ranging from municipal solid waste to agricultural waste—is a growing field for scientific research. He also emphasized the importance of innovation in sustainable energy and waste management for economic growth.
The theme of this year’s ISC is "Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with Women Empowerment." Discussions will cover the role of science in empowering women and fostering a sustainable future.
The Prime Minister noted that India has climbed global rankings in scientific research, now ranking 40th in the Global Innovation Index. He credited initiatives such as increased research funding and international collaborations as key drivers of India's scientific progress.
With India assuming the G20 presidency, Modi highlighted the importance of including science and innovation in global priorities. He called for greater investment in research and technology to secure India’s future as a global leader in science and innovation.
