Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the deaths of seven people in a stampede during a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) public meeting in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore on Wednesday. In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced ex-gratia payments of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 each to the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
The fatal incident occurred when a scuffle broke out between TDP party workers during the meeting attended by party leader N Chandrababu Naidu, resulting in a stampede. The injured were admitted to a local hospital. Naidu has since announced that each family of the deceased would receive Rs 10 lakh, and the children of those who lost their lives would be offered education funds from NTR Trust educational institutions. The deadly stampede is currently under investigation by local authorities.
