Bus Travel Company Shocked by Tech Glitch Fraud

A private transportation company operating throughout South India complained to cybercrime authorities that 54 people took advantage of a loophole in their e-ticket booking system and defrauded the company of more than Rs 3 crore.

According to the general manager of Sri Krishna Travels (SKT), M. Srinivas Rao, the company suffered significant losses between May and July of this year as a result of the fraudulent activity.

A software flaw was identified by the accused individuals who then exploited it to steal excess automatic refunds generated after they cancelled bookings within minutes. The system effectively doubled the amount available for future misuse when they cloned the technique.

One of the instances cited in the complaint involves a suspect named AC Swarna, who reportedly misused the system on May 1. She paid 16,300 via her digital wallet and 146.31 via Paytm for four seats, then cancelled the transactions, receiving a refund of 111,970 (6,300 + 5,670) in her wallet.

According to the complaint, the company has suffered both direct monetary loss and misinformation regarding seat inventory, which has had a negative impact on legitimate travelers.

The cybercrime officials stated that they are looking into the complaint and trying to identify and arrest the accused individuals, who have been charged under sections 66 and 43 of the Information Technology Act. They added that the complainant had supplied customer information for all the accused, including phone numbers.
