Recently, a mentally challenged woman was beaten up by a group of people in Hyderabad on suspicions of being a part of a child abduction gang. This unfortunate event occurred after the woman was found talking to a young boy, believed to be aged six, near an apartment block.
The boy's mother, who assumed the woman to be a kidnapper, confronted the woman and found out she was mentally challenged and unable to recall her name. Fearful that the woman was attempting to abduct the child, the mother tied her up and proceeded to beat her with a stick. The incident was filmed by onlookers, and the woman was later handed over to the Gachibowli police.
The police stated that the woman has been admitted to a shelter home, and efforts are being taken to identify her family.
This unfortunate incident shines a blinding light on the heightened fears of child abduction in India and the failures of the society to address and support the needs of those with mental disabilities.
