'Disgraceful': Supreme Court refuses urgent listing of plea against India-Pakistan Asia Cup match

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant an urgent listing of a plea that sought to cancel the India-Pakistan Asia Cup match scheduled in Dubai on September 28.

The plea, filed by an advocate, contended that the match should not be allowed given the "prevailing hostile environment, which is against national interest, sovereignty, and integrity of India."

The plea referred to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, during which two Indian soldiers were killed, and Operation Sindoor, under which the Indian security forces have sought to wipe out terrorists in the region.

"India vs Pakistan cricket match is scheduled in Dubai on 28.09.2022, which is contrary to national interest and integrity, and to allow such sporting engagement with Pakistan, at this juncture, would amount to playing on the graves of our soldiers," the plea said.

The petition also sought a direction to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India to impress upon the Emirates Cricket Board to hand over the itinerary and travel details of the Pakistan cricket team, as well as a direction to the police to ensure the safety of citizens who are "annoyed and outraged by the conduct of Pakistan and such sporting engagement."

The plea was filed on Monday and listed for hearing on Tuesday, but the Supreme Court refused to grant an urgent listing, saying there was no urgency.

"Why do you want it (the matter) to be listed urgently? There is no urgency," a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit said.

The top court subsequently listed the matter for hearing on Wednesday (September 28) before a two-judge bench.

The petition is likely to be dismissed as the Asia Cup match has already been called off due to rain.

Despite the match being rained off, the general mood among Indians is one of disgruntlement due to the Pakistani team receiving a 'warlike' welcome on Indian soil.
