Hyundai Motor Workers Released, Jae Myung Lee Threatens US Investment

Hyunndai Motor employees who were detained in the US have returned to South Korea, despite their release, President Lee Jae-Myung's warning that US investment is at risk without visa reforms.

Last week, US authorities detained 330 Hyundai Motor workers in Georgia. The employees were questioned and processed for working in the US without proper work visas. Their employer, a Carrollton-based plant of Hyundai, pays them to build massive transporters for military tanks.

The workers arrived in Incheon airport on Wednesday morning on a flight from Atlanta. They were received by the heads of the Hyundai Motor Company and a deputy industry minister, according to the ministry.

Lee Jae-Myung, in a statement, stressed the importance of mutual cooperation and emphasized the need for an open and flexible immigration policy. However, he also issued a warning, emphasizing the importance of a stable workforce for investment. Moving forward, he said, "We will never tolerate any disadvantageous conditions for Korean businesses."

Some workers, however, were not released, including one who'd already filed for a visa extension and another who had applied for immigration benefits. They will remain in detention until their cases are reviewed and resolved.
