The prestigious Archery World Championships currently taking place in the Dutch city of Leiden has seen a mixed bag of results for the Indian contingent, with impressive performances from the compound archers and disappointing results in the recurve discipline.
The biggest highlight of the tournament for India so far has been the impressive show put in by 22-year-old Gagana Khadake in the women's individual recurve competition. Despite facing formidable opponents in the shape of world number 3 Michelle Kroppen Bauer from Germany, and 48th-ranked Thea Rogers from Britain, Khadake caused a major upset in the 1/16 elimination round by beating Bauer 6-4.
This win came on the back of solid performances in the qualifying rounds, where she clocked a impressive 703/1080 score, beating Azerbaijan's Fatima Husenli 7-1 in the process. The young Indian then went on to comprehensively beat Britain's Thea Rogers 6-0 in the 1/8 elimination round.
However, it was not all about celebrating victories for the Indian archery team at the World Championships. Well-known archer Deepika Kumari, who ranked as high as number 1 in the world in this discipline in the past, disappointingly failed to qualify for the elimination rounds, finishing outside the top 44.
Her results included a disappointing defeat at the hands of Italy's Tatiana Andreoli, who beat her comprehensively 6-0. This result meant that Deepika Kumari's road at the World Championships came to an end sooner than expected, and she will not be featuring in the round of 16 elimination round.
With India fielding a strong compound team as well, with top-ranked Abhishek Verma in action, it remains to be seen if any other Indian archers can make the medal rounds.
