When Indian hockey star Hardik Singh saw the plight of a family of four living in a tent after losing their home and belongings in the devastating Punjab floods, he knew he had to help.
The floods, the deadliest in Pakistan's history, have claimed the lives of over 1,700 people and displaced millions. Many have lost their homes and livelihoods, with no sight of recovery in sight.
Hardik, who plays for India's national men's hockey team, recently met the family, who had been forced to live in a tent after their house was destroyed in the floods. The athlete was moved by their story and decided to adopt them.
Speaking to local press, Hardik said: "When I saw the kids had no roof over their heads, I couldn't just sit back and do nothing. I have spent time in their situation when I was young, and it pains me to see any child go through this."
Hardik has now provided the family with a new home, and is working on helping them get back on their feet by providing them with groceries, clothing, and school fees for the children.
"I want to help them as much as I can," he said. "I am also appealing to people to come forward and help me in this cause."
The family, who were identified only by their surname, Dhillon, were overwhelmed by Hardik's generosity and kindness.
Mr Dhillon said: "We have been left with nothing and were struggling to get back on our feet. We owe a debt of gratitude to Hardik Singh for coming to our aid when we needed it most."
Hardik's kindness and compassion is a shining example of the impact one person can have on others. His story is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope ahead.
