International Big Cat Alliance Launched for Global Conservation

The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) has been officially established as a treaty-based intergovernmental organization, aiming to enhance global efforts in conserving big cats. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 9, 2023, IBCA commemorates 50 years of Project Tiger. The signing of the Framework Agreement by five founding countries marked a significant milestone in wildlife conservation.

Following the approval by the Indian Union Cabinet on February 29, 2024, IBCA was formally created with its headquarters in India. Initially, five countries—Nicaragua, Eswatini, Somalia, and Liberia—ratified the treaty and became formal members. Currently, 27 countries have expressed their commitment to joining the alliance.

The primary goal of IBCA is to conserve the seven major big cat species: Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma. The alliance aims to unify conservation efforts across nations and foster collaboration among stakeholders. It encourages the sharing of successful conservation practices and expertise while focusing on preventing illegal wildlife trade, providing financial and technical assistance, and mitigating the effects of climate change.

IBCA seeks to create a collaborative platform that brings together national and international organizations involved in wildlife conservation. By enhancing the dissemination of best practices, the alliance ensures access to a central repository of technical knowledge and funding. Financial support plays a crucial role in IBCA’s mission to halt the decline of big cat populations and reverse negative trends. Strengthening existing intergovernmental platforms and conservation networks is another key focus.

Under India's leadership, IBCA is set to make a significant impact on global wildlife conservation. By facilitating knowledge sharing and resource pooling among member countries, the alliance addresses the challenges faced by big cats worldwide. Its vision is to see thriving big cat populations while mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on their habitats. Through international cooperation, IBCA aims to secure a sustainable future for big cats and the ecosystems they inhabit.
