Maoist leader Modem Balkrishna, among 10 others, died in a encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district, according to police. The gunfight reportedly took place in the jungles ofSarja Valley, Helpline area, on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of 10 Maoists and no casualties on the security forces' side.
Modem Balkrishna, a senior Maoist leader, played a prominent role in the abduction of Collector Alex Paul Menon in 2012. The Maoists reportedly kidnapped Menon to protest the proposed coal mining projects in the state.
The confrontation occurred in Gariaband district, known for its rich mineral resources, including limestone and dolomite deposits, and is situated in the insurgency-hit Bastar region.
"They (Maoists) opened fire on the team of the Special Task Force (STF) conducting the operation. The security forces retaliated effectively, leading to the exchange,"Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abhishek Pallava told the media.
The deceased Maoists include six women, according to police. Further, a cache of sophisticated weapons, ammunition, and explosives were reportedly recovered from the spot.
"It was a joint operation of the STF, District Reserve Guard (DRG), and the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), a specialised unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The operation was underway to sanitise the area," said Superintendent of Police (SP) Shalabh Mathur.
The deceased Maoists included six women, one of whom was Modem Balkrishna, a member of the Maoist central committee and the state committee secretary of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), confirmed Inspector General (IG) of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P.
