Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has shared an update on the company’ssearch for a chief of staff, revealing that 18 individuals have already joinedZomato in high-impact roles, with another 12 receiving offers across Zomato andits group companies, including Blinkit.
In a post on X, Goyal clarified that all new hires are being"handsomely compensated" for their contributions, reiterating thatnone were asked to pay any fees to the company. This statement comes after acontroversial job posting in November 2024, where Goyal had initially sought achief of staff willing to forgo a salary for a year and instead donate Rs 20lakh to Zomato. Following public backlash, Goyal retracted this requirement.
Goyal provided further details on the hiring process, explainingthat Zomato had received more than 18,000 applications for the role, and hepersonally interviewed over 150 candidates. While the original post indicatedthat only one candidate would be chosen, Goyal revealed that 30 individuals hadbeen offered positions, with 18 already joining the company. Among them, fourare working directly with Goyal, including two in chief of staff roles.
Goyal emphasized that this recruitment process is part of along-term investment in Zomato’s future. "With over 18,000 applications,we are still carefully evaluating this amazing talent pool. This isn’t aone-time hiring push, it’s a sustained effort to bring in people who will helpshape our future," he said.
He also elaborated on the qualities he was seeking in candidates,which included traits like hunger, common sense, empathy, and a strong learningmindset, while avoiding the baggage of traditional experiences. Goyalhighlighted that those who were selected come from diverse backgrounds,including “founders who bootstrapped startups from their dorm rooms, engineerswho rewrote entire tech stacks over the weekend, and brilliant young mindsfresh out of college.”
What set these candidates apart, according to Goyal, was theirlong-term vision. "They are not focused on short-term gains but oncreating lasting, compounding impact," he added.
