Former Brazil President Bolsonaro Guilty Of Plotting Coup Found Guilty

Over four months after the violent insurrection attempt against the Brazilian government, former President Bolsonaro was found guilty of plotting the coup on Sunday.

Judge Kassio Nunes ruled that Bolsonaro had likely encouraged the uprising, and potentially committed other crimes against the country, citing events such as when Bolsonaro reportedly told supporters that "we will not let this happen" in reference to Lula being declared the winner of the presidential election in October 2022.

The sentence is yet to be decided, with potential punishments ranging from a fine to a maximum of 30 months in prison.

Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since early August for violating court orders prohibiting him from making public comments about the election results.

He has since been investigated for his involvement in the events of 1 January, where supporters ransacked the presidential palace, Congress, and the Supreme Court in the capital, Brasilia.

He claims the election results are fraudulent, refusing to recognize Lula as the legitimate president.

The guilty verdict came on the same day that Bolsonaro's former economy minister, Paulo Guedes, testified that the uprising was indeed a coup plot that the former president had encouraged.

"It's clear to me that we weren't dealing with a spontaneous protest," Guedes said. "They wanted to provoke a reaction from the army and then negotiate..."
