The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducted the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2024 on June 16 across India, following a postponement from May 26 due to the Lok Sabha elections. The exam, held annually in three stages—preliminary, main, and interview—is pivotal for selecting candidates for prestigious roles like IAS, IPS, and IFS officers. Approximately 44,063 candidates appeared for the exam in Prayagraj alone, with a notable attendance rate of around 54%. The examination comprised two sessions: General Studies Paper 1 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. A total of 915 jammers were installed across centers to maintain exam integrity.
The question papers were structured with 100 questions in each session, focusing on subjects such as history, geography, polity, economics, environment, ecology, general science, and current affairs. Candidates found the paper relatively easier compared to previous years, with expectations that the cutoff could range between 95 and 100 marks out of 200. The Economy section particularly featured 18 questions, predominantly covering themes like banking and finance, with a majority categorized as concept-based. Overall, the exam's successful completion marked a significant milestone for aspirants aiming to join India's civil services, highlighting the ongoing importance of rigorous preparation and strategic approach in the competitive landscape of UPSC examinations.
