Sweeping changes in Nellore

Three new 3D automated sweeping machines, the first of their kind in India, are now working in the southern city of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. The state government provided the machines, manufactured by Danish company Gemtec, to the Nellore Municipal Corporation, as part of its sweeping modernization of waste management and recycling.

The machines were introduced in October 2022, ahead of India's Constitution Day on 26 November, and are being used in Nellore's busiest public areas. Each machine can collect, sort, and compact up to 5,000 litres of waste daily. They can also sweep and scrub streets, reducing the need for manual sweeping.

The machines have been introduced as part of the country's Smart Cities mission, with the Indian government aiming to improve the country's urban landscape and improve the lives of millions of people living in major cities.

Their use is expected to boost overall sanitation and strengthen waste management practices in the city, with officials hoping they will become a model for other cities across the country.

"These machines can run round the clock and give a much-needed boost to the sanitation and waste management process in the city," an official told the Times of India.

"With the installation of these machines, the city will become totally sanitised and waste-free, sending a message to the entire country that Nellore is playing a key role in the Smart Cities mission," they added.
