Hyderabad residents risked losing large amounts of money on fraudulent pre-paid tasks and work-from-home scams. The police warned residents to stay vigilant and avoid falling prey to these cyber crimes.
The police further advised Hyderabad residents to report any suspicious messages to their cyber helpline and provided emergency contacts for such instances. These warnings and emergency contacts were disseminated via their social media platforms, @CyberCrimePSHyd, which residents can follow for updates.
The following details two instances of fraud reported to the police:
The first complaint, filed on September 5, alleged that a 35-year-old Abids resident was defrauded of more than Rs 10 lakh by Qube Research and Technologies. The victim was approached on WhatsApp regarding an opportunity to earn money through Google reviews. They were later lured into a prepaid job that requested multiple deposits. The scammer disabled withdrawals and demanded more deposits, resulting in the victim losing more than Rs 10 lakh.
The second complaint, filed on August 28, reported that a 44-year-old Asifnagar resident was contacted by a woman posing as Veena Khatri from Michael Page IT. She offered the victim a work-from-home job to search for branded keywords. The victim was directed to a fraudulent website, where they were instructed to invest more money. They were eventually defrauded of Rs 1,61,720.
These cases alert residents to the escalating cyber fraud risks and the need to confirm the authenticity of any unsolicited job offers received.
