The Tamil Nadu Assembly Assurance Committee has reviewed the development works in Thoothukudi district and assured the completion of long-pending projects. The committee, which met in Tiruchirappalli on Thursday, took stock of the progress in various sectors, including drinking water, drainage, roads, and public health.
According to reports, the committee analyzed in detail the steps to be taken to complete the ongoing works and the expected date of completion of each project.
As per the minutes of the meeting, the committee instructed the department officials to complete the Thoothukudi Medical College hospital building complex and premises at an estimated cost of 181.80 crore by December 2023.
Similarly, it also instructed the authorities to complete road development works in the districts at an estimated cost of 82.80 crore by March 2023.
"The committee appreciated the efforts of the officials in completing the restoration works of the Thoothukudi railway station and advised them to take necessary action to complete the ongoing works at the Mayiladuthurai railway station as early as possible," the minutes added.
The meeting also decided to look into the possibility of establishing a government medical college in Ramanathapuram and a women's college in Perambalur.
"The committee further directed the officials to examine the feasibility of constructing a bridge across the Cauvery river connecting Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai," the minutes said.
The meeting was chaired by M. Appavu, Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, and attended by senior officials of various departments.
The Assurance Committee's move to review the development works in Thoothukudi district is indeed a step in the right direction, and one can only hope that these assurances will translate into action and benefit the people of Thoothukudi.
