More and more students and young professionals in Telangana, India, are falling prey to substance abuse, often turning to drugs to cope with the stress of academic pressure or career pressures. According to a recent report by the National Drug Authority, Telangana featured a shocking upward drug abuse trend, with an average of 3.5 percent of the population consuming drugs, mainly cannabis and opioids, compared to the national average of 2.8 percent.
The authority's surveys underscored the prevalence of drug abuse in Telangana, highlighting that out of the state's total population, more than 5 percent aged 10 to 75 years had consumed drugs for non-medical purposes in the last year. Interestingly, the maximum drug consumption was reported amongst the age groups of 16 to 35 years, comprising students, young professionals, and adults.
Sadly, this trend seems to be escalating. With increasing availability, affordability, and social acceptance of drugs, the state's youth is becoming more susceptible to substance abuse, raising concerns about the impact on their health, well-being, and future.
To address this concerning issue and empower students with the skills needed to resist drug temptation, the National Drug Authority, Telangana, has planned to expand its drug prevention and awareness programs across educational institutions. They aim to reach out to students at all levels to educate them about the dangers of drug abuse and provide them with resources to make healthier life choices and avoid the potential tragic consequences.
"Drug abuse is a societal issue that requires collective efforts to address. Through our prevention programs, we aim to empower young people with knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and build a safer and healthier future for themselves and their peers."
