Hyderabad Residents Defrauded by Work-from-Home and Pre-Paid Tasks Scams

Hyderabad residents are warned of recent cyber fraud syndicates targeting individuals through lucrative-looking work-from-home and pre-paid task scams. With the city reporting two significant cases of individuals losing over 10 Lakh rupees apiece, it is imperative to acknowledge the heinous means employed by such perpetrators and understand how to safeguard ourselves and our loved ones.

The police department has issued an advisory highlighting essential measures to prevent such scams. They urged residents to be cautious of any job offers that lead to prepaid task scams, emphasizing that the best approach is to refrain from trusting unsolicited job offers on messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram. The authorities further emphasized the need to verify the authenticity of any company offering such opportunities.

The two cases highlighted how vulnerable and unsuspecting residents, hoping to supplement their income, could fall prey to such fraudulent tactics. In the first instance, a resident of Abids was targeted through a WhatsApp message from a woman named Chandrika, who lured the individual into a prepaid job scam. The victim lost over 10 lakh rupees in multiple deposits, realizing it was a scam only after disabling withdrawals and demanding further deposits.

In the second case, a resident of Asifnagar was offered a work-from-home job opportunity by a woman claiming to be Veena Khatri. She lured the victim with small initial payments and gradually directed him to a fraudulent website. The victim lost nearly 1.6 lakh rupees when a fake balance was displayed, and demands were made for additional payments to release the balance.

The police have advised residents to report suspicious messages to their cyber helpline at 1930 or the Cybercrime.gov.in website. The authorities further urged residents to follow their social media links for the latest cyber awareness updates.

The police department has advised residents to be vigilant and reject any suspicious job offers that lead to prepaid tasks. They further emphasized the need to verify the authenticity of any company before engaging with them. These warnings and advisory messages hope to prevent further individuals from becoming victims of cybercrime.
