Hyderabad Police Launch Trauma-Informed Centre to Aid Human Trafficking Survivors

The Hyderabad police have launched a groundbreaking initiative to aid survivors of human trafficking. Called the Anti Human Trafficking Unit - Victim Assistance Centre (AHTU-VAC), the facility is located at the Womens Police Station in Basheerbagh. The centre will provide a wide range of services to victims, including legal support, psychological counselling, shelter referrals, vocational rehabilitation and assistance with reintegration into society. The AHTU-VAC brings together a multidisciplinary team of police officers, psychologists, legal counsellors and medical professionals to help trafficking survivors. The centre has been set up in collaboration with two non-governmental organisations, Prajwala and My Choices Foundation. Both organisations have been working to fight trafficking in the state of Telangana. Hyderabad Police Commissioner K. Sreenivasa Reddy expressed the centre is designed to be a safe and healing space for those rescued from trafficking. The project is expected to serve as a template for similar initiatives across Telangana.

This new development underscores the increased focus on victim assistance and child protection in the state. The unit will also monitor bonded labour, child labour, forced marriages and sexual exploitation cases, which often go underreported. The centre will also support child protection efforts by responding to cases of abuse, missing children and forced labour.

This collaborative model of survivor support is expected to serve as a template for similar units across Telangana, marking a significant shift in the state's anti-trafficking framework.
