Gold Investments in India Surge 60% to ₹1.5 Lakh Crore in 2024

India witnessed a remarkable surge in gold investments in 2024, with a 60% increase in value terms, reaching approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore ($18 billion) compared to the previous year, according to a recent report. The strong demand for the yellow metal has been driven by multiple factors, including global economic uncertainties, inflation concerns, and a growing preference for gold as a safe-haven asset.

The report highlights that gold demand remained robust in the October-December quarter of 2024, with consumption reaching 76 tonnes, nearly matching the previous quarter’s performance. The consistent demand suggests that Indian consumers and investors continue to rely on gold as a stable investment option despite market fluctuations.

Experts attribute this surge in gold investments to various macroeconomic factors, including geopolitical tensions, fluctuations in currency values, and rising inflation. Additionally, gold's performance as a hedge against economic volatility has further strengthened its appeal among Indian investors. The increasing digital adoption of gold investment platforms has also contributed to the sector’s growth, making gold more accessible to retail investors.

The report also notes that central banks across the world, including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), have been increasing their gold reserves, further boosting investor confidence. Moreover, the rise in gold prices in the international market has played a crucial role in driving investment sentiment in India.

With the demand for gold remaining strong, industry experts predict that investments in the metal will continue to rise in 2024. As global economic uncertainties persist, Indian investors are expected to maintain their preference for gold as a long-term wealth preservation asset.
