Breeks Memorial School’s Sesquicentennial Celebrations
The sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of Breeks Memorial Anglo-Indian School in Udhagamandalam was a poignant event, marked by a communion service in honour of James Wilkinson Breeks, the first Commissioner of the Nilgiris. The ceremony took place at the iconic St Stephen's Church on a misty morning, with a wreath-laying at Breeks’ memorial stone in the church cemetery, attended by Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, Nilgiris district collector, and alumni of the school.
Remembering Breeks’ Contributions
James Wilkinson Breeks was a visionary Anglo-Indian administrator who played a crucial role in the development of education in the Nilgiris. According to Mark Blackett-Ord from the Breeks family, Breeks’ legacy as a successful administrator and his contribution to education in India continue to inspire. Mark, along with his daughter Elinor Corfield, travelled from London to participate in this momentous event.
Bandwagon 150: A Global Reunion
The event, dubbed Bandwagon 150, also served as a worldwide reunion for alumni of Breeks Memorial School and its sister institution, the Breeks Higher Secondary School. The reunion celebrated not only the school’s long-standing history but also the continuing connection among its graduates across the world.
Breeks’ Legacy in Education
Mark Blackett-Ord spoke about Breeks’ background, highlighting his education at the East India College in England, where he was trained for his future role as an administrator in British India. Breeks, who moved to India at the age of 19, left an indelible mark on the education system, particularly in the Nilgiris.
