Rape victim: 'I can't feel safe in my home country')

A Sikh woman touring the UK on a bicycle was sexually assaulted in a racially motivated attack near Manchester Tuesday. The attacker, who was imprisoned for eight years, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the crime.

The victim, who was unhoused and had been sleeping in a local park, was approached by a man who sexually assaulted her and said, "Go back to your country," she told Manchester Evening News.

The attack occurred in broad daylight on a busy street, leaving the woman physically and mentally traumatized. The man who committed the assault was described as a white male, 5'6" tall, with short brown hair, and wore a light blue t-shirt and light jeans.

Police are investigating the attack as racially motivated and are appealing to any persons with information to come forward and contact authorities. The assault has left the woman, as well as other members of the Sikh community, feeling unsafe and has raised concerns about the rise in hate crimes in the region.

Cyclists say that despite efforts to make the city more welcoming to bicyclists, women often feel unsafe due to a lack of designated cycling infrastructure and intimidating roads.

The attacker, who also attacked another woman in a separate incident that was not racially motivated, will be held at Her Majesty's pleasure under the terms of his sentence, according to police.
