TVK Rally: Vijay's Tiruchi Arrival Plagued by Hours of Delay

TVK rally came to a standstill as actor-politician Vijay's convoy crawled through Tiruchi city on Thursday, with thousands of supporters waiting for hours despite a crackdown on violations that forced feverish last-minute changes.

Mr. Vijay's cavalcade, which left the airport a little after 3 pm, took four hours to cover the eight-kilometre stretch to Marakkadai, even as police used batons and fired tear gas to control the unruly crowd, according to multiple witnesses.

The hold-up occurred despite organizers renaming the event "Vijay Vizha" and the superstar's speech being slotted for an earlier time at 3 pm. Shops remained closed and traffic was heavy in the city, which witnessed a fan frenzy earlier this week when Mr. Vijay was welcomed on his birthday on June 22.

Sources from his party, the Tamilaruvimanian Kazhagam (TVK), said all the arrangements were made afresh for Mr. Vijay's convoy, which included just one decked-out truck this time instead of the earlier plan for five trucks.

The bottleneck was caused by barricades placed at junctions along the route, which were removed after the rally was rerouted from the main highway to smaller roads and the original plan of a five-kilometer march was shortened to a three-kilometer procession, sources said.
