In a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, Kuki State Demand Force (KSDF), a group representing the ethnic Kuki tribe, submitted a memorandum asking for the creation of a separate Union Territory for the tribe within Manipur. According to the memorandum, the Kuki people have been facing ethnic persecution and displacement since 2023.

The request for a separate UT comes from the ongoing conflict between the Kuki tribe and the majority Meitei tribe in Manipur, which has resulted in the displacement of over 100,000 people since the violence erupted in 2021.

The Kuki MLAs, who are a part of the BJP, believe that the creation of a separate UT will provide political and economic stability to the region and ensure the safety of the Kuki people. They claimed that the existing administrative setup does not do enough to address the violence and discrimination against the tribe.

The memorandum submitted by the Kuki MLAs comes shortly after the Prime Minister's first visit to the state since the border clashes erupted.
