India's rising star Shubman Gill has revealed that veteran England seamer James Anderson posed the biggest challenge to him, claiming that it is due to Anderson's ability to bowl in the "right areas" and "know the temperament of the batsmen." Gill, who made his Test debut against Australia last year, has faced Anderson eight times in the longest format of the game, being dismissed six times by the pacer.
Gill, who scored a impressive 91 in the second innings of the third Test against England, revealed that he has learned a lot from the encounters with Anderson.
"He is maybe not as quick as some of the other bowlers but still challenging," Gill told Sky Sports. "You know that even if you are struck outside the off-stump, chances are it will still come up. It's just the patience you need to have against a bowler like him and accept that you might not get many runs off him.
"I wouldn't say I have a particular strategy , I think I more have in my mind what I shouldn't try to do. Like trying to be dominant, especially when I am starting my innings. I shouldn't try to dominate him, maybe just try to play him as deep as possible and wait for him to make a mistake."
The 21-year-old opener said facing Anderson early in his career has helped him become a better player of seam bowling. "I have had a few encounters now, I have had a few chances to face him. You learn something new every time you face a bowler like him, or even a bowler who is quicker than him," he said.
"You know he (Anderson) is not going to bowl any loose deliveries, you might get him, maybe once or twice in a spell. You have to be really focused, your concentration should be really good. Even if you are planning to score runs, you have to be really patient."
At the end of the day, Gill's remarks reflect Anderson's enduring legend and class, garnering respect even from those he dismisses with regularity.
