Fort William Officially Renamed Vijay Durg

The Indian Army’s Eastern Command headquarters, Fort William, has been officially renamed Vijay Durg. This change is part of India’s ongoing efforts to move away from colonial legacies and honor its indigenous military history. The decision, made in December 2024, marks a historic shift from British influence to a recognition of India's past. In addition to renaming the fort, Kitchener House within Fort William has been renamed Manekshaw House, and St. George’s Gate is now called Shivaji Gate.

Fort William, originally built by the British in 1781, was named after King William III of England. It served as a key military stronghold during British rule in India, playing a vital role in controlling trade and military operations in Bengal due to its strategic location on the eastern banks of the River Hooghly. The new name, Vijay Durg, pays tribute to a historic fort along Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg coast, which was an important naval base during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This renaming highlights India’s military heritage and seeks to replace colonial references with indigenous ones.

This move aligns with the Government of India’s broader initiative to decolonize public spaces and institutions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration has previously undertaken similar efforts, such as renaming Rajpath to Kartavya Path. These changes aim to embrace India’s cultural identity and historical legacy, ensuring that public landmarks reflect the nation's rich heritage rather than colonial rule.

Fort William is also home to several historical and cultural attractions. A museum within the fort is dedicated to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, displaying artifacts related to the Bangladesh Liberation War. Additionally, a war memorial at the entrance commemorates the sacrifices of Indian soldiers. While Fort William remains a strong reminder of colonial architecture, its design has been adapted to suit contemporary military needs, ensuring that it remains relevant while preserving its historical significance.
