A worrying outbreak of vomiting, viral fever, and diarrhea has struck Gurukul Residential School (Girls) in Atmakur, Nellore district. Around 40 students have been affected, and roughly 20 have been sent home to recover, while another 20 students have been admitted to a nearby Primary Health Centre and are undergoing treatment.
The school is located near a dumping yard, and students' health may have been adversely affected by flies. Sanitation workers cleaned the school under the watch of the Municipal Commissioner. The students' health is reportedly stable, but Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy has called an emergency meeting to tackle the outbreak.
He directed officials from the Revenue, Police, Education Department, and Municipal to take immediate action and arrange proper facilities to prevent such incidents from recurring. It is not clear whether the outbreak is widespread in other schools and hostels in the area.
The minister is gathering information on the spread of viral fevers in other educational institutions as well.
An official suggestion to take immediate action and proper arrangements to prevent such incidents from recurring has been made.
