A woman from Karnataka, along with her associates, has been arrested for duping a Hyderabad suitor of Rs 25 lakh through a fake Instagram profile. The police warned the public about online matrimonial scams and provided a list of common red flags.
The 33-year-old accused, Aneesa Mohmadyaseen Hundekar, along with her associates Zohar Fathima (24) and Mohammed Abdul Aamer (31), created an Instagram account named khoobsurat.rishte using photos and videos of attractive women. The accused joined Islamic matrimony WhatsApp groups and promised prospective grooms a suitable bride. Once contact was made, they would ask for money under various pretenses. The victim discovered the profile picture belonged to a Pakistani influencer and approached the police.
The police recovered several items during the operation, including mobile phones, a tablet, a laptop, bank passbooks, checkbooks, and debit cards. The police warned the public to be vigilant and never provide banking or personal information. Victims of such fraud should contact the police or the cybercrime website.
According to the police, common red flags of online matrimonial fraud include avoidance of personal meetings, sudden requests for money, overly romantic gestures in a short time, and inconsistent personal details. The police further advised that all details should be verified, and family members should be involved in the process.
