Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's administration has been criticized for failing to address industrial decline and joblessness in the state. Stating that the situation has only worsened since the DMK came to power, former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami accused the current government of prioritizing power dynamics and benefiting their relatives instead of addressing the issue. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) joined the criticism, alleging that the DMK government had failed to address the problems of industrial workers and small businessmen while being indifferent to their plight.
The DMK's rule has been characterized by declining industrial growth, leading to job losses and a surge in unemployment. Between April and September 2022, Tamil Nadu lost around 1,80,000 jobs, according to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). The situation is dire, with approximately 51,00,000 unemployed individuals in the state, accounting for around 31% of the state's population aged between 15 and 59 years.
Palaniswami blamed the Stalin administration for failing to address the issue, alleging that the Chief Minister was more focused on bestowing power and positions on members of his family rather than tackling the problem. The declining industrial sector has had a cascading effect on the state's economy, resulting in a decline in production, demand, and consumption.
The TNCC has criticized the government's indifference to the plight of industrial workers and small businessmen, further emphasizing the worsening economic situation in the state. With unemployment on the rise and the economy lagging, the DMK government's ability to address these issues and bring about the much-needed reform remains questionable.
