A young woman killed in Hyderabad in October 2020 didn't die in a road accident as initially believed. Police have re-opened the case and found she was raped and killed by three men, who then tried to cover up their crime.
The woman, who was working at a supermarket, had left work briefly when she was attacked and dragged into the nearby bushes. The suspects raped her before smashing her head in with a rock. They then tried to burn her face to prevent identification and threw her body into a nearby canal.
Police initially believed hers was a hit-and-run case, but further investigations revealed the brutal truth.
The suspects, who were also arrested for theft, admitted to the rape and murder during interrogations. They revealed their intention was to rob the young woman, but when their attempt failed, they raped and killed her.
The police have arrested three suspects linked to the case and charged them with murder, rape, and kidnapping. Investigations are ongoing.
This case sheds light on the gruesome crimes that continue to take place against women in India.
Experts say these crimes continue to occur due to apathy and negligence by the government and the police force, and a general lack of empathy and conscience amongst the populace.
Only heightened awareness and pressure on the authorities will result in faster justice for such heinous crimes, they add.
