Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh: Ten drunken young men attacked doctors and medical staff at a government hospital in Chittoor after an X-ray revealed the extent of an injury was less serious than the patient believed, according to police and local media reports. The incident, which occurred on the night of Friday, December 2, sparked a protest by hospital staff the following morning.
The injured man, identified by police as Ravi Kumar, and a friend, had consumed alcohol when Kumar injured his elbow in a fall. Attending the government-run hospital, Kumar allegedly insisted to the radiologist that he had fractured his elbow, but the X-ray showed no evidence of a fracture.
This sparked a confrontation which then turned physical, with Kumar and his friend, along with eight other friends who joined them, allegedly assaulting the radiologist and doctors on duty in the emergency ward.Staff alerted police, who arrived and detained the two men and their friends. However, officers said that the ten suspects had fled by the time they arrived.
Police registered a case against the men and are looking to arrest and remand them, said Two Town CI Nettikantaiah, who attended the scene.Hospital staff held a dharna, a protest involving a sit-in, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, demanding stern action be taken against the culprits.
Health minister Y. Satya Kumar Yadav, who has been outspoken on issues around public healthcare provision, condemned the attack, saying in a statement: "I strongly condemn the attack on doctors and medical staff on night duty at Chittoor Government Hospital.
If there are mistakes or shortcomings, complaints should be lodged with higher authorities, but physical assaults that undermine the morale of medical staff are unacceptable. Legal action will be taken against those involved."
