Just when it looked like Chelsea had done enough to escape with all three points, a late Fabio Carvalho strike denied the Blues a much-needed win.
At a chilly Brentford Community Stadium, the home side flew out of the traps quickest, and it was no surprise when they took the lead through German-born forward Kevin Schade. The goal was the result of some sloppy play from the Blues, and Thomas Tuchel's side looked rattled for the opening quarter of the match.
A tactical switch from the German coach sparked a turnaround, however. Cole Palmer, on loan from parent club Manchester City, scored an excellent equalizer, and then Moises Caicedo thought he had won it for Chelsea with an opportunistic strike with just over ten minutes remaining.
But it was not to be, as a nervy and tense finale took another twist in the first minute of stoppage time when Carvalho slammed home a loose ball to ensure both sides left with a share of the spoils.
The draw does little to ease the concerns of either side, with both Chelsea and Brentford still cemented in the middle of the Premier League table, and with the busy Christmas period just around the corner, both will be hoping to kick on and achieve a top-half finish.
Nevertheless, it was an entertaining affair in west London, and after a frustrating 90 minutes, Chelsea can take heart from their fightback and the performance of Palmer, who looked dangerous throughout.
Maybe the Blues will look to keep him beyond his current loan spell, as he looks to have the potential to become a key part of Tuchel's plans at Stamford Bridge.
