A recent tragic death in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has brought the longstanding struggles of the Banjara community into the spotlight. The demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservation is at the heart of the matter. After a 32-year-old Banjara man was found dead at his home, the police recovered a note he had written to the chief minister, asking for ST status for his community. The deceased, identified as Pavan Chavan, had returned home recently after participating in a reservation agitation led by Gor Sena chief Sandesh Pawar.
The disturbing incident occurred only a few days after an autorickshaw driver, Bharat Karad, allegedly jumped into the Manjra River over fears of OBC reservation coming to an end. The Banjara community, frustrated and distressed over the years, is actively creating awareness about ST reservation and is demanding recognition as ST, claiming that their rightful status should be restored according to the Hyderabad Gazette.
The Banjara Kruti Samiti has planned a protest march to the Jalna district collector's office on September 15th, pushing for their demand. It is hoped that this incident will lead to a re-examination of the community's demands and a resolution that brings the Banjara community the justice they deserve.
