'Undeservedly Left Out': Dada Backs Shreyas Iyer; Questions Asia Cup Omission

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who is also the president of the Bengal Cricket Association, has come out in support of Shreyas Iyer, stating that the player should have been picked for the Asia Cup 2022, ahead of player XYZ.

"I am surprised that Shreyas Iyer has not been selected for the Asia Cup. He is a senior player and has captained Delhi Capitals to the IPL final. He has been in good form as well. There must be something the selectors and management people have in mind while picking the team," Ganguly was quoted as saying by Times of India.

"But he (Iyer) should have been picked for the Asia Cup. Everyone knows that he is a brilliant player," he further added.

Iyer, who led Delhi Capitals in the last two IPLs, was not included in the India squad for the upcoming continental tournament. Though the team is packed with openers across the board, Iyer's omission raised many eyebrows.

Many believe he should have been picked ahead of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who too has been in mediocre form in the IPL and international cricket lately.

Ganguly's statement comes ahead of the Asia Cup, to be held in the UAE from August 27 to September 11.

The former skipper is known for speaking his mind and has previously backed youngsters like Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan, signaling a shift in the selection process.

With this statement, he throws his weight behind Shreyas Iyer, backing him to be a crucial part of the Indian setup in the future.
