The Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express in West Bengal's Darjeeling district was struck by a goods train, resulting in the derailment of three rear coaches. The accident, which occurred near New Jalpaiguri station, led to at least 9 deaths and 41 injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation for the victims, and initial investigations suggest the goods train's loco pilot ignored a signal. The collision disrupted train services, leading to the cancellation of 19 trains and blocking both Up and Down lines.
The death toll rose to 10 on Tuesday as a child succumbed to injuries. Train services resumed with the Avadh Assam Express passing the accident site. Emergency teams were dispatched, and President Droupadi Murmu and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed their condolences. The Northeast Frontier Railway diverted 22 trains to alternative routes, highlighting the need for enhanced railway safety measures.
